A video of Zoei Toh, then 2 years 8 months old, singing "The Lord's Prayer" has received more than 5.5 million hits on YouTube and circulated around the world in forwarded e-mail. A Google search of her name reveals that her videos are embeded in hundreds of people's websites.
Zoei is the daughter of Toh See Wei and his wife, Yen, Malaysians who live in Loma Linda while they both work on Doctor of Public Health degrees at Loma Linda University.
See Wei plans to go to Malaysia to work at the Penang Adventist Hospital when he finishes his doctoral dissertation in the fall. Yen plans to finish her degree by the end of the year. A former fitness center manager and college fitness lecturer, she is concentrating her studies on nutrition at LLU.
Zoei, born Jan. 7, 2005, surprised her parents when, at about 16 months, she started singing. When Yen overheard her toddler singing the popular song from "The Sound of Music," "Doe, a deer, a female deer...," she was shocked.
"I was scratching my head. I never taught her this song. Not my husband," Yen said. They checked with the babysitter. This was the song the babysitter sang when she fed Zoei. She somehow picked up the song while eating.
More surprises awaited the Tohs. Zoei added more songs to her repertoire before she turned 2 years old: "The Old Rugged Cross," "Amazing Grace," the Doxology, and "The Lord's Prayer" — none of which her parents had ever purposely taught Zoei. So where and how did she learn these songs?
"We've played background music in our home almost every day since she was born," Yen said. "Little Zoei must have learned from the CDs we played. The learning has never been intended or planned."
"When Zoei started singing, we put the videos up on YouTube for the family in Malaysia, Canada and Australia to see her," See Wei said. Since then, Zoei's songs have captured the hearts not only of her family members, but also of strangers around the world.
See Wei and Yen have received thousands of comments from viewers. In fact, Zoei's YouTube account indicates that the 13 videos the Tohs have uploaded have had more than 8 million views. Thousands of people have responded. One website shows her "Lord's Prayer" video with the comment, "This video is circling the world and it's powerful."
"Zoei's singing touches people's hearts," Yen said. "I think Zoei has created a ministry in her own way." See Wei and Yen say they're open to the idea of a singing ministry for Zoei, but haven't pursued it.
"Our intention is not to make her a celebrity," See Wie said. "We want to keep in touch with our family through the Internet," Yen added, "but as long as Zoei wants to sing, we will show the videos, and we will let God lead."
