The Provo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Provo, Utah, was founded in 1897 and has experienced graffiti and vandalism throughout that 110-year period.
In an effort to reduce vandalism and graffiti to local churches, and to provide positive activities for youth in a safe environment, the Provo Adventist church plans to build a gymnasium that will be open to area youth.
Linda P. Walton, fundraising chair, said, "We know that young people face many challenges and we want to dedicate this gymnasium and its programming to children and young adults for sporting events, cultural and social activities."
The church is raising funds to complete the project by the end of 2008. This project also includes the remodeling of their existing building to accommodate growth.
Remodeling the chapel and classrooms will begin in January and construction of the new building is planned for spring, 2008, at a cost of $450,000. The congregation has already raised $200,000 towards remodeling the existing building and expanding the parking lot. The total project will cost about $800,000.
Local designer Val Killian has donated his expertise and time to assist the church with design and construction consultation. Other contractors and suppliers are offering assistance with various aspects of the project.
A recent benefit concert, featuring pianist Janette Rodriguez-Flores, raised about $5,000, plus leads on additional funding. A proposal for a grant funded by the Mormon Church is also being pursued.
"Our congregation is also very involved in emergency services and is planning to offer the use of the new facility, complete with handicapped restrooms and shower facilities, to Provo City and Utah County for their use as a shelter in case of disaster," Pastor J. Andres Flores, said. "It's proximity to the police and fire station will provide for a great emergency center."
