Twenty-two Righteous Rage youth group members and leaders from the Mountain View church in Las Vegas, Nev., participated in a 30-hour fast Feb. 16-17 in conjunction with World Vision Famine Relief.
"This is a way for the youth of America to raise money to help feed both children and adults in Africa. It comes out to one dollar to feed a person for the entire day," explained Daniel Morea, group leader. "World Vision asks for a minimum of 30 sponsors for each participant, at one dollar a piece. Just 30 dollars."
Friends and members at Mountain View supported the youth and went above and beyond the 30 dollars per person. The group raised $1,400, which will feed 1,400 people in a day or four children for an entire year.
Parents, caretakers and anyone familiar with the eating habits of young people realize just how much of a challenge it is to go 30 hours without food. To challenge the youth even further, on the afternoon of the second day of the fast, the youth made sandwiches and delivered them to the Salvation Army for the area's homeless.
"The families in Africa are going through ridiculously awful times — something we can't even imagine — this is a way to help us sort of understand, on a small scale, what they are going through every day," said participant Luisa MaKaron.
Charlotte Ferguson, 16, explained, "I am doing this because I want to be a part of something that can help the future generations of this world so they don't have to live in poverty and help their future generations avoid poverty."
"I want to help a child who doesn't have what I have, which is food on the table," said Jackie Licon. "We also got the opportunity to bond and grow closer by experiencing what children in Africa go through daily."
