India Mission Project Results in 15,000+ Baptisms
Jim Ayer
After a grueling 48-hour journey, an Amazing Facts’ team of 88 volunteers arrived in India in November, for a mission project titled "India Now." They were ready not only to bring the gospel to multiple villages and construct houses of worship, but also to do what few others have attempted—bring medical and dental help to thousands of suffering and needy families.
Doug Clark from Maranatha India reported that the medical and evangelism vision of Pastor Doug Batchelor, senior pastor of the Sacramento Central church and president of Amazing Facts, was the largest, most encompassing goal his team had ever undertaken for a single effort. He estimated that 1,400 workers were needed to handle the monumental task.
From the beginning, the team knew great things would happen because of the trials that they had to face. First, the meetings were almost rained out, and the medical and visitation teams were slowed down due to sewage-soaked mud bogs in towns and villages. Thankfully, God stopped the rain and brought out the sunshine to dry up the water.
Then the volunteer force was faced with sickness and danger on the roadways. Volunteer Daryl Wheeler, DDS, recorded no less than seven accidents involving India Now vehicles and personnel. Then, when India Now was entering into its final days, local police were told to shut down all foreign meetings. But, because of the intensive medical work, the local police allowed the meetings to move ahead, even though they shut down other evangelistic meetings. As always, God was well able to overcome every challenge.
The grand finale came on Friday, Nov. 24. That night, 175 trucks, each hauling up to 125 or more seekers, arrived at the four-acre parcel of land where a stage and screens were set up. In addition, cars, bicycles and motorcycles brought people to hear the message of Jesus Christ, which was clearly and passionately presented by Batchelor. An amazing crowd of approximately 20,000 searching souls attended the meeting.
The hard work of the India Now volunteers resulted in more than 15,000 baptisms and 10,000 medical and dental patients treated. The members of India Now were excited to be part of such a huge outpouring of the Holy Spirit. “I’ve been on 30 mission trips, and this is one of the best I’ve ever been a part of,” said Mel Underhill, a doctor from Tennessee.
