Southern California is a paradise for retirement. Vacation wonderlands beckon from the desert, beach and mountains. Retired Adventists in the Southeastern California Conference are an active and important segment of the conference, involved in mission trips and upholding their church at home. Each year about 150 retirees attend two retreats, one in May and another in September, at Pine Springs Ranch.
At these retreats retired Adventists, church workers and members alike, visit, tell wonderful stories, share each other's wisdom and enjoy the speakers' messages. SECC underwrites about a third of the cost to make them affordable for most.
Lorie Purdey, director of retiree ministries, says: "I'm indeed fortunate to follow in the footsteps of Elder John Rhodes, who for so many years led out in the retiree work. One area we're interested in expanding is to include more of our younger retirees, ages 55-70. We have added a lot of outdoor activities, croquet, horseshoes, hiking, volleyball and hayrides for that very purpose.
"To experience the laughter, camaraderie, and developing friendships, join us next May for a truly exhilarating experience. And for churches that conduct regular retiree get-togethers, please inform our office when and where you meet, as well as leaders' names and phone numbers. As I'm able, I'd enjoy the privilege of meeting with you," says Purdey.
