Dr. Nancy Vyhmeister was honored October 24 as one of six Woman of the Year award recipients by the Association of Adventist Women. The organization's annual meeting in Silver Spring, Maryland, was its twenty-fifth nationwide event.
Nancy Weber was born in Portland, Oregon, but grew up in South America, where she became fluent in Spanish. A graduate of Pacific Union College, she met her future husband, Werner Vyhmeister, in an elevator at a General Conference session in Cleveland, Ohio. They married in Argentina and worked in South America until 1966, when they went to Andrews University. After completing their master's degrees, they returned to South America, where for 17 years Nancy translated and edited, mostly for the seven-volume Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary.
They returned to Michigan in 1975, when Werner became dean of the SDA Theological Seminary and she taught mission classes and edited Seminary Studies. By this time they both had earned doctoral degrees.
In 1984 they moved to the Philippines, where Werner was president/dean of the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies and Nancy designed the master of theology and doctor of ministry programs
In 2000 they retired, which gave them opportunity to do special projects in India, Mexico, and Africa. They make their retirement home in Yucaipa, California.
