On Labor Day weekend, the regional ministries department held its annual convocation in Salt Lake City, with the Salt Lake Central church hosting the event. But the meetings were not held at the Central church, which was not large enough.
Instead of renting a Sunday church for the convocation, as in years past, all the services and meals were held at the Wasatch Hills church, the largest of the Adventist churches in the area. Their members were part of the convocation's worship and fellowship all weekend.
Bernie Anderson, pastor of the Wasatch Hills church and his members agreed to combine their worship service with the convocation services. "I am thankful that the Wasatch Hills church opened their home to us. It was such a blessing to worship in an Adventist church on Sabbath morning," remarked regional ministry director, Kingsley Palmer.
The program began Friday evening with Pacific Union secretary, Ricardo Graham, offering the opening address. The early Sabbath morning "Power Hour" was presented by Pacific Union women's ministry director, Linda Pennick, and Sabbath School was facilitated by Russell Lewars, youth pastor of the Las Vegas Abundant Life church. While the adults enjoyed their programs, the youth listened to Andrews University seminary student, Damian Chandler.
The main worship hour speaker was Jessie Wilson, director of church growth and worship for the Southeastern California Conference. Wilson used Joseph's experience to remind attendees that at times trials and woes become so discouraging that giving up seems the natural answer, but that is not God's plan for us. "Joseph was first sold as a slave, then he spent two year's in jail before he finally became a ruler in Egypt. Each step of the journey was where God wanted him." Wilson told attendees not to give up before it's time to receive your blessing.
Sabbath afternoon seminars were presented by Anderson, Sali Butler, Chandler, Pennick, and Wilson. Anderson facilitated the seminar "From Boys to Men," Butler facilitated "Body Works Part I and II," Chandler facilitated "Teens & Youth," Pennick facilitated a women's seminar and Wilson facilitated "Church Growth and Leadership."
Next year's convocation will be held in Las Vegas and plans are in the works. "I have attended three or four convocations, and every year is better than the last, and this year was no exception. I can't wait for next year!" exclaimed Ed Johnson enthusiastic attendee.
