Molokai VBS Attracts Community Interest
Teryl Loeffler

"Around the World With God" was the theme of the Molokai Seventh-day Adventist Church Vacation Bible School. According to Brenda Kaneshiro, the church's children's ministries coordinator, "The goal was to provide a safe and attractive learning environment where children could learn about Jesus and about God's love for everyone. We ministered to 25 children and their parents. Only seven of these children were from families of church members."

Each day the children met for a song service and a short video clip about ADRA's work around the world—from a kid's point of view. Three groups of children then took their "passports" and rotated through the three learning stations: crafts, Bible, and "Kids Around the World" which featured life in Mali, Tanzania, India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia.

At the Bible station they learned a Bible story and a memory verse.

At the Kid's Around the World station they located the country of the day on a large map and learned about the lives of children in that country, plus a typical greeting from that country. Then "Pastor Kurt" Unglaub and his wife, Margaret, told stories from their experiences in the mission field.

At the craft station the children made crafts with a purpose, such as African hut coin banks, in which they saved money for an ADRA project.

After rotating through their stations, the children met again in the sanctuary where Pastor Kurt gave a five-minute Bible lesson that tied the themes from all the stations together.

Each day the program ended with a visit from a local community leader representing education, economic development, conservation, health, or—everyone's favorite—the fire department. Each child got to shower the lawn with a powerful fire hose.

Sabbath morning, all of the children and most of the parents came to church for a special closing program. They sang, recited their memory verses, told what they learned about other countries and collected an offering for their special ADRA project. One parent said, "It makes me very happy to see that my children are so eager to love Jesus."

Brenda Kaneshiro expressed her gratitude for the sixteen youth and adult volunteers. "This alone touched me—to have this much support from our church family and friends. We have also enjoyed the attendance of at least two of these children at our Sabbath School and church services. Praise God!"

The church plans to follow the VBS with a monthly Bible school program with the same international theme.
