With a flare of enthusiasm, the Upland Indonesian congregation of 300 members in Bloomington, Calif., welcomed Sinyo H. Sarundayang, governor of Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia, during Sabbath services June 30.
In the U.S. to attend the United Nations Organization in New York regarding the proposed World Ocean Conference 2009, the governor included in his itinerary visits to Manadonese congregations. A non-Adventist Christian, Sarundayang reflected the music-loving communities of Manadonese as he sang "Give Thanks" prior to the sermon by Gary D. Strunk, church pastor.
In the afternoon, the governor presented information and pictures of the Manado, Indonesian country, a nostalgic presentation for many who had not seen their homeland for a long time.
That evening a fundraising event, "Caring Indonesian Night," brought together musicians, vocal groups, and choirs to assist the Indonesian people who have suffered much from natural disasters. The event, held at the Colony High School auditorium in Ontario, drew hundreds of participants.
Roger Tauran initiated the occasion and Tommy Wuysang, Colton-Agape Indonesian church, was master of ceremonies of the event that brought together several denominations and affiliations with the theme, "Jesus' Blood, Healing and Saving."
Counselor General of the Republic of Indonesia for the Los Angeles district, Subijaksono "Sonny" Suyono, accompanied by his wife and staff, were among the prominent guests. Governor Sarundayang received the proceeds of the evening on behalf of the Indonesian Red Cross of Northern Sulawesi.
