Unique and Different, United by the Divine
In August 2006, Holbrook Seventh-day Adventist Indian School celebrates 60 years educating and preparing Native American young people from around the United States to become responsible Christian leaders in their communities.
The little mission school that started in 1946 with a handful of students has grown to a fully-accredited 21st century school offering vocational and college preparatory programs. The campus has expanded, the curriculum improved, the quality of instruction excelled, and the loyalty of HIS supporters continues to grow.
In the past three years, numerous major developments have occurred at Holbrook. Recent improvements include:
Completion of an 18,000 sq. ft. boys' dormitory
Expanded curricular offerings to meet college prep requirements
A vocational program which includes welding, auto mechanics, woodworking, construction, small engine repair and computer-aided drafting
Enhanced pottery industry program
New maintenance facilities
Landscaping and extensive upgrade to the campus grounds
Upgraded electrical system
Working partnership with Commonweal Foundation
Fully-Accredited
The North American Division Office of Education accreditation team recently visited the campus and spent several days reviewing our curriculum and talking to teachers and students. They read through mountains of documents, visited all the classes, and when finished, informed HIS that our accreditation was renewed for several more years.
College
Many have considered adding a junior college to our program, but until now, we have felt that the hurdles were insurmountable. Again, God has opened doors for us and we will be extending the opportunity to our students to attend the first year of college right here on our campus beginning this fall. It is our hope that within three years, we will be capable of offering a full associate degree program to interested students.
Day-to-Day Jesus
Even more important than education is the opportunity to introduce students to the love of Jesus. Many students arrive on campus not knowing about God. While attending HIS, students learn of a loving Savior through Bible classes, church services and Pathfinders. We know all heaven rejoices with us as each year we have students give their hearts to Jesus—especially when they step into the baptismal pool. Students look forward to sharing this new way of life with others through community service projects, Bible studies and mission trips.
Our students represent different tribes—Navajo, Sioux, Apache, Hopi, Havasupai, Micmac—all come to HIS for different reasons. Yet their cultural differences disappear as they find themselves united in friendship and purpose as a result of His divine love. God has continued to pour out His blessings on Holbrook Seventh-day Adventist Indian School.
