The recent National Geographic story, The Secrets of Living Longer, which also appeared on CNN and ABC, featured Adventist longevity. The story was possible because of the 1976 Adventist Health Study-1. If it werent for the 34,000 Californian Adventists who joined that study, there would never would have been a story.
The health discoveries from AHS -1 have benefited millions of people and enhanced the reputation of Adventists worldwide. The potential for the current Adventist Health Study-2 is much greater.
Loma Linda researchers estimate that more than 17,000 of those 1976 participants, now between 60 and 100 years old, are still alive. Nearly 5,000 of these pioneer newsmakers have already enrolled in the AHS-2 study. But it would be wonderful if thousands more of these early participants continued the legacy they created.
Another 15,000 Seventh-day Adventists are needed to join the 90,000 who have already completed the AHS -2 questionnaire. Loma Linda is now recruiting everyone 30 years and older to join the study (the cutoff was previously age 35).
