L.A. Academy Seniors Listen for the Call

Los Angeles Adventist Academy has operated continuously as either a K-8 or K-12 educational institution on its South Los Angeles campus since September 1947. The academy has always maintained a reputation of distinction in the community for longevity of Christian leadership and service.
For nearly six decades, the school has provided a steady stream of graduates who continue their educational pursuits and enter service-oriented professions, says Principal Lilly Nelson. Preparing students for a life of Christian service represents the heart and soul of our program."
As with its sister academies, nearly 100 percent of LAAAs graduating seniors attend college with approximately 80 percent earning degrees, according to academy registrar Bobby Hunt. The schools 28 seniors have already completed numerous applications to Adventist colleges and universities.
Students point out that Ann Guys career education class involves far more than career awareness research. This class also encourages students to explore their God-given talents and to look for evidences of His divine call to service. During senior interviews, students indicated that their diverse career paths include ministry, medicine, education, law and social work.
The school also takes pride in having furnished the denomination with talented leadership, including former students Calvin Rock, retired vice-president of the General Conference; Wayne Shepperd, retired vice president of the Pacific Union Conference; and James G. Lee Jr., current vice president of Southern California Conference. Additionally, countless constituents and community leaders trace their educational roots to this historic school, which remains committed to academic excellence and the development of Christian character.
