Chaplain Creates Ministry Opportunities for Students
By Phil Draper
Matthew and Sarah Theoret came to Thunderbird Adventist Academy two years ago. A native of Canada and a new graduate from Atlantic Union College, Theoret didn’t really know what he was expecting in campus ministry when he accepted the position as chaplain. But he soon found that life on an academy campus could be extremely interesting and challenging — and working with youthful, creative students was the most fulfilling opportunity imaginable.
"I have become a big believer in ministries," Theoret explains. "I believe Jesus took people’s passions and turned them into ministry opportunities. Like the fishermen he chose as His disciples — He told them He would make them fishers of men."
Theoret has created several new ministry opportunities for the students at TAA that use the talents they each have. Some of these ministries include Prayer Warriors, Puppets, Clowns, M&M (mix and make), Operation Kindness, Athletic Ministries, and Signing for the Deaf. For example, M&M participants make sack lunches and pass them on to Operation Kindness participants who deliver the lunches to the homeless."
Theoret has found several students who already have a strong relationship with Jesus and know the power of prayer. They are actively involved as Prayer Warriors. They pray regularly for the needs of their fellow students and teachers.
Clown Ministry regulars believe that a cheerful heart is good medicine. They enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of people who are facing challenges in life. "That’s what Jesus did," Theoret explains. "When He met people, He made them forget their sorrows and pain and brought smiles to their faces."
Another ministry involves athletics, giving opportunities for physically gifted youth to witness during intramurals and with health and wellness talks. They are even planning some cooking classes for their peers.
Theoret emphasizes his desire to train leaders – not just to entertain kids! He has developed an acronym – MOLD IT! M: Meet with Him daily through prayer; O: Open God’s Word; L: Learn power Scripture verses and commit them to memory; D: Develop an accountability relationship with someone; I: Involvement in a local or home church; T: Teach others what they’re learning.
Theoret baptized three students on Dec. 10, 2005 — Raul Montero, a senior; K.J. Park, a junior; and John Wickerd, a sophomore. He started studies with the boys in November. After their baptism, he has continued follow-up studies. Currently he is studying with two more who are planning for an April 2006 baptism.
The opportunities for ministry are broad and open for a dedicated young minister like Theoret. He is planning to continue his Master of Divinity program at Andrews University in another couple of years. But his heart is daily becoming more and more entwined with the students at TAA. His prayer is that God will direct his ministry and make these years a springboard for future soul-winning.
This spring, Matt’s wife, Sarah, will graduate with a degree in elementary education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
