Vancouver Aquarium Displays LLU Marine Biologists’ Adventures on Website
By Patricia K. Thio
There’s no question about it. The faculty and students in the earth and biological sciences department definitely have stories to tell about their adventurous research studies. The Vancouver Aquarium is sharing their accounts by posting LLU’s marine biologists’ journals on the “From the Field” website section.
From the blue zone, Stephen Dunbar, Ph.D., assistant professor of marine biology, LLU, reports on “Yaqara Bay: Bay of Plenty” as he and the team venture to the waters of Fiji. By conducting the first-ever formal survey of Yaqara Bay’s marine invertebrates, the researchers are collecting scientific evidence of the bay’s importance to marine life—information that could be vital in designating the region as a Marine Protected Area.
Reporting from a remote island off the coast of Belize, Marie-Lys Bacchus, master biology student, chronicles her time with manatees as a field researcher with the Earthwatch “Manatees in Belize” Research Project. On Bacchus’s first day, the team finds a lost manatee in a marina—a dangerous spot for it. What happens next?
Visit vanaqua.org and click on “From the Field” to read and see pictures of LLU’s marine biologists in action.
