What about your church is meaningful and inspiring to you?
Southeastern California responds...
I love my church and am excited about it. I became an Adventist because of the witness of my wife and her mother. My pastor is a great mentor and motivator. He goes out of his way to involve us in the church, helping us, telling us, showing us. He’s always there for us. His preaching is exciting, with new ideas. Each Sabbath he goes to the youth department and for 10 minutes prays with and for the young people.

I was looking for a church home among several denominations and found in the Adventist church a closeness that drew me in. Although my faith was wavering a little, as I kept attending it became strong. I love the praying and praising at our church, but the best part is the message. I go to worship to feel closer to God and learn more of His Word.

There’s something about our contemporary First Service (7:30 Friday evenings) that gives freedom. Freedom to be yourself, to meet Jesus, worship, fellowship and be aware. The service is valuable because it’s relevant to young people. It’ s really important to me to be comfortable in what I wear and how I worship, and just express my spirituality with other people that do the same. First Service provides that and more.

Great things about my church are the wide diversity of ethnic backgrounds, perspectives, programming, and the freedom to express our beliefs and worship without fear of judgment. Most of our 1,500 members have a variety of responsibilities and ministries. This is a big congregation, but it feels warm and familiar, even to single people. It’s mine! I like and respect all of our pastors (three men, two women). I especially admire our senior pastor, Hyveth Williams, for her prodigious biblical scholarship, and her open and vulnerable heart that reflects the love of God.

I’m inspired by our terrific pastoral staff, who share God-centered messages that have given me the best picture of God that I’ve ever had. I am also inspired and blessed by the multi-cultural congregation (11 a.m. service), which gives me a small taste of what heaven will be like.

A Christ-centered service thrills and inspires me. When the focus is on Christ and the presentation is so simplified that anyone would understand it, when it is real and sincere, then it is Christ and not the music or presentation that is the center.

Our 8:30 a.m. worship has three elements that amplify each other. As we read the liturgy together we are mindful of our relationships, the seasons, and great spiritual lessons linked to the church year. We listen to the text, significant passages from the Hebrew Scripture, the Psalms, New Testament, and the Gospels. Finally, we hear a thoughtful homily prepared each week by a different person. The service does not revolve around one personality. The entire worship experience is coherent and anchored in the Bible.

I enjoy Sabbath school tremendously because it gives me an opportunity to share my ideas and hear others’ views on the lesson. I like being part of the music and singing, and am especially inspired by the testimonies regarding our Christian experience. Naturally, hearing the Word preached and enjoying the fellowship is also meaningful to me.
