Large Tsunami Offering Helps Adventist Victims
By Kit Watts
With heartfelt generosity, Southeastern California Conference (SECC) members donated $116,000 for Adventists who lost homes, possessions and tools for their livelihood in the Dec. 26 tsunami in Asia.
“It’s the largest special offering we’ve had for such a mission during the last decade,” said Gerald Penick, conference president. “We thank everyone who shared so unselfishly.”
“At the same time, SECC members gave another $98,000 to ADRA through their local churches,” said Arlind Hackett, associate treasurer. (ADRA provides disaster assistance to any in need; this may or may not include Adventists.)
The Loma Linda Indonesian church raised an additional $6,000 for a tsunami relief project organized by their members.
SECC has named a committee to evaluate needs and projects and to disburse funds to help Adventist members rebuild their lives. Committee members include: conference officers: Gerald Penick, Sandy Roberts, Tom Staples; vice presidents: Rudy Bermudez, George King, Mario Perez; pastors: Albert Pardede (Loma Linda Indonesian church), Sam Shadrach (leader, Southern Asia group), Dan Smith (La Sierra University church), Sunny Wilamart (Thai church); conference committee member: Kay Khoo; office staff representative: Rosie Hing.
