That is one of many questions answered by our first through fourth grade teacher, Gayle Smith, at Whittier Adventist Elementary School during her supplemental teaching unit on apples. During the month of October, Smith spent extra minutes with her class teaching them all about apples.
Her discussions included the parts of an apple, types of apples, and people associated with apples, including Johnny Appleseed. She also had a hand crank apple peeler for the students to use at lunch. The thematic unit ended with Apple Daya special day where the students were able to sample a variety of apples, apple butter, apple sauce, etc.
