Whittier Adventist Elementary School Celebrates Sweetest Day
The students from Whittier Adventist School surprised members of the Whittier church with loaves of banana bread on Oct. 16 in honor of Sweetest Day.
Sweetest Day is a special day started during the Depression in Ohio and is celebrated the third Saturday of October. It started as a day when people would help those less fortunate than themselves with a special treat or gift. Later, it developed into a day of expressing thanks to others with a small token of appreciation. It has been spreading across the United States ever since.
Students in Daniel Westons fifth through eighth grade class spent some time over several days learning how to follow recipes to bake loaves of banana bread. They ended up making 117 loaves. The students enjoyed making the bread and passing them out after church. The loaves were passed out with a note explaining Sweetest Day and expressing the schools appreciation for the financial support the church members provide for their school.
