LAAA Athletics Pursue Victory and Build Character
By Dr. Lilly Nelson
The athletic program at Los Angeles Adventist Academy (LAAA) is growing. Initially, it began with boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Since joining the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) four years ago, under the direction of Athletic Director John Damon, Jr., the program now offers cross country, boys’ and girls volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, golf, and softball. Plans include adding track and field or tennis in 2005-06.
The cross country team finished in league and the boys’ varsity basketball team won its first outright and back-to-back league championship this year. The girls varsity basketball team kept a 3.1 GPA or better for the second year in a row and won their third consecutive championship without a loss (24-0). Both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams extended their seasons to the second round of the CIF Division V Championship. Not satisfied with just athletic prowess, the athletes strive to make a difference by participating in community services, such as keeping monthly appointments to serve the homeless and visiting local convalescent homes. They have also been featured in the local newspaper.
