Pathfinder Convocation Spotlights Learning, Inspiration and Fun
By Betty Cooney
Training and learning keynoted the 2005 Pathfinder convocation, in addition to fun, inspiration and seeing friends, according to Pathfinder Director Bob Wong.
This year’s sermonettes painted word pictures of the convocation’s theme, “Come, Lord Jesus.” Kevin Geraneo, Central Filipino church, told Pathfinders, “I sometimes imagine that maybe when we are already in heaven, Pastor Bob will call all of us one day and say that we are going to have a Pathfinder convocation by the throne of Jesus and that our speaker will be no other than our Lord Jesus Himself. I am looking forward to that day!”
Speaking of doubts some people have because of heartaches, Debbie Poon of the Los Angeles Chinese church, reminded Pathfinders of Jesus’ words, “’If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. I am asking in my prayer, ‘Come, Lord Jesus.’"
Daniel Garza, Spanish-American church, asked, “Have you imagined what it’s going to be like to arrive in heaven? I picture a grand entrance unlike any other, an unforgettable event.”
Sharon Cobb, Normandie Avenue church, speaking of the signs of Jesus’ coming, said, “Pathfinders, all these signs are taking place before our very eyes. Our hearts are burdened with the things taking place around us, but Jesus tells us that when we see all these things taking place, we should look up, because His coming is at hand.”
When Wong called for Pathfinders who wanted to be baptized to come forward, 83 responded.
The more than 1,700 youth gathered for the annual event cheered on participants of a very close "Bible Jeopardy" game produced and hosted by John Heczko, M.D., a member of the White Memorial church, host site for the convocation. Excitement ran high, since the prize was a free week at Camp Cedar Falls. Andres Lam, Los Angeles Chinese church, was the winner.
In the months before the "Bible Jeopardy" board lit up and while contestants were studying Scripture to prepare, Heczko wrote the game’s questions and spent hours training a team of Pathfinder-age kids to run the technical equipment used for the game. For the past five years, the physician has been training young people to run the White Memorial church’s audio-visual equipment and cameras, so the current team at the church was enlisted to help with "Bible Jeopardy."
“While I have been teaching them,” he added, “they’ve taught me.” Heczko has since been teaching church Pathfinders an updated version of the video honor, including computer editing.
