Almost every day in Hawaii is beautiful, with gentle trade winds, blue skies, fluffy cumulus clouds, and gentle tropical rain. However, even the weather can be eclipsed when the children of Hawaii demonstrate they are the church of today as well as the church of tomorrow.
The Aiea church recently decided to take up the challenge of the Hawaii Conference to transform children into spiritual champions, especially those between the ages of five and 12. Although already evangelizing children through Vacation Bible School and GraceLink Sabbath school, Aiea wanted to do more by providing opportunities for children to lead hence the idea of children providing the entire church worship service.
It was easy on this special day to notice the enthusiasm in the air as soon as Sabbath school ended. The children quickly organized for the church service. Even the last minute directions by the adults could not temper the excitement. As the children marched to the front, the atmosphere of energy started to permeate the entire sanctuary. Parents, relatives, and members of the church waited with great anticipation. There is something about pretty little dresses, neatly pressed shirts, and cute smiles that warm hearts and uplift souls.
The entire church service was conducted by the children and youth. The cradle roll and kindergarten divisions began the welcome with a rousing song service, creating an atmosphere of praise. All eyes and ears were riveted on the little ones as they sang with energy and conviction. Every church member had their full attention on this worship service, said one member.
As the childrens choir sang We are Soldiers in the Army, each child, even the very little ones, would shout, Stand up and fight anyhow! Their infectious spirit reverberated throughout the sanctuary, because every child was obviously enthusiastic and sang from the heart.
The primary division was in charge of the offering. Just like the adult deacons had done so many Sabbaths before them, a neatly dressed group of primary boys with their kukui nut leis marched to the front with offering plates in hand.
During the juniors part of the service, church members received spiritual lessons through a puppet drama. All eyes were focused on the puppets as they conversed with each other behind a curtain stage. The junior class also presented the Scripture reading and short sermonettes on grace using Scriptures and stories about their lives. The last speaker closed his presentation by singing, Amazing Grace. Other young people joined in the song to close the service.
Throughout the entire service, there was a sense of awe and praise for Jesus, Who constantly demonstrates His love for little ones. Everyone attending this childrens church service walked away with the sense that children have many gifts and talents that can and should be utilized for the Lord. Although it is important to establish practices that promote their participation as they are trained to serve for the future, the Aiea church has also proved they can be leaders now.
