When the women of Lockeford church heard Ray and Ruth James, a couple who had been ministering at the church for more than 10 years, announce their retirement, they felt it was time to plan something special, especially for Ruth, who had faithfully been organizing and cultivating Lockefords womens ministries.
Ruth has ministered to the women of her church in a personal way. She has spent countless hours giving Bible studies, visiting members at their homes or at the hospital, conducting a weekly ladies prayer group and opening her home and cooking for church social occasions.
She's full of ideas, and shes always busy with thoughtful little things such as beautifully wrapped gifts, magnets for the refrigerator with inspirational sayings, bookmarks and beautiful table decorations for special dinners, said Barbara Miller. You name the event, and she decorates for it. She also makes leis and bouquets of flowers for the women.
In addition to her other responsibilities, Ruth also works with the Lockeford church board to nominate women to receive the annual Northern California Conference Women of Distinction Award. The NCC womens ministries advisory council, an executive committee of 10 women representing various ethnicities and ages, acknowledges the nominated women with the award.
We are trying to recognize the unsung heroes, said Darlys Robertson, NCC womens ministries coordinator. The committee felt there were many women who were very important to the mechanics of the church but never received any recognition.
Seeing that Ruth had nominated many other women for the Women of Distinction Award, the ladies of Lockeford felt that it was Ruths turn to receive the award. Wanting to surprise Ruth with the award, they contacted Robertson directly.
The plan worked, and Ruth was completely taken aback by the award. I was just so surprised, said Ruth. I never dreamed of receiving the award myself. The Lockeford women also arranged for a special Team Ministry Award" to also honor the couple on their retirement.
It has been a real privilege to work with Ruth James in her dual role as a womens ministries leader and pastors wife, said Robertson. She has a passion for ministering to women and adds a sensitive and feminine touch that complements her husbands ministry.
