To better meet the outline of the La Sierra University Spiritual Master Plan, campus ministries has been renamed Spiritual Life.
Given our diverse student population and the variety of services the network provides, Spiritual Life seemed like a more appropriate name, says Samuel Leonor, campus pastor. We understand that students have different personalities, are at different spiritual developmental stages, and that they come with different levels of faith. At LSU we try to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to encounter Jesus, make decisions for Him, and learn to live His way.
One example of this occurred during freshman orientation weekend. Spiritual Life held a ministry extravaganza called The Power Plug that connected new students to ministry on campus. Approximately 15 ministries were represented at the fair-style event where 200 students signed up to participate, enjoyed a homemade breakfast, a devotional, music and fellowship.
The Power Plug came up because we wanted orientation Sabbath School, says Marni McClain, senior social work major. We wanted to orient the students to spiritual life at LSU, and we wanted them to have the opportunity to become involved with anything that they have a passion for.
What impressed me most about The Power Plug was how well all the leaders came together to promote their particular ministry, says McClain. Another thing that impressed me was how much the freshman were taking advantage of the leadership opportunities offered to them.
We are working on putting the majority of our missions efforts into short terms, adds Leonor. This means radically increasing the number of short term trips we plan every year, partnering with more organizations that provide opportunities for service, and making it easier for students to participate. Our goal is to offer students a service choice for every break cheap enough that they have to choose between a mission trip or buying a $199 iPod.
