Union Holds Small School Teacher Workshops
By Dorothea Amey, associate director of education in the Pacific Union
The Pacific Union Conference is proud of its many talented, professionally-educated teachers. More than a third of these teachers serve in small, sometimes isolated schools. They are often principals as well as teachers of several grades. Through the years they have provided quality education for students.
The union believes it is important to affirm and provide support for these hard-working educators. In October 2003, the union held a workshop in Sacramento for one-room school teachers. Then in October 2004, an additional workshop was conducted, also in Sacramento, for the upper grade teachers in two-teacher schools.
The union and the seven conferences supported these workshops both financially and with personnel. All of the presentations were geared to the unique needs teachers in small schools. Discussion topics included recruitment, public relations, administrative responsibilities, North American Division small-school materials, classroom management, study skills, and technology in the classroom.
“I loved the energy and enthusiasm of all of the presenters,” wrote one teacher on the wrap-up evaluation. “This was so beneficial to me.”
A highlight of the workshops was the opportunity for teachers to network and share ideas with other teachers. Many of them presented ideas that work well in their own small schools.
“It is so wonderful to be with teachers who are in my place as a one-room school teacher,” said another attendee. “I found the workshop to be comforting, healing in a ministering way, and wonderfully educational.” When asked how the workshop could be improved, many said, “Just make it last longer!” and “Let’s do it again in the near future.”
