Volunteers Needed at Camp Yavapine Work Bee
By Shirley Chipman
Camp Meeting 2004 and Summer Camp were right around the corner as new camp director Gary Lewis wondered if all the painting, cleaning, yard work and other repairs could possibly get done.
Two work bees were held, one in March and one in April, and Arizona church members rallied to the cause. They not only raked, painted, trimmed trees, and cleaned -- but had a good time doing it.
Carol and Jim and others spent most of their time in the horse stable, cleaning out items that had accumulated, some heavy and bulky. Donna and her mother Dixie were part of the baking and kitchen crew. Brad brought painting equipment and a whole crew worked on painting cabins. Newlyweds Erik and Janna spent several days working at the camp. Bob from Peoria-Sun Cities spent 3 or 4 days tearing out damaged wallboard in one of the men's bathrooms and then replacing it . When asked (in the middle of all the repair) if he was enjoying the weekend, he replied with a big smile, "We do get a tee shirt for this, right?"
"We provide three good meals each day, "offers director Gary Lewis, "and a cabin to sleep in at night. It's a little cooler up here, and the air is fresh -- and we sure could use the help."
Two more work bees are planned for this fall, September 24-28 and October 29 - November 2. To be part of either volunteer team, contact Phil, 480-991-6777, ext. 139 (phildraper@azconference.org) or Shirley, ext. 117 (shirleychipman@azconference.org).
