Youth Enjoy Camp Meeting Despite Rain
By Jessika Tucker
Imagine. Majestic, green mountains surround a secluded valley. Feet walk across supple grass. Insects flit by, and squirrels scurry up trees.
This is God’s house. He has created everything, and no better place exists to worship Him.
While this place may sound too good to be true, it’s not. It describes the campground in Springville, Utah, the site of the Nevada-Utah Conference’s annual camp meeting. From June 14-19, Seventh-day Adventists from Utah, Nevada, and even a few from California traveled to the Springville camp meeting to experience the glory of God.
The Nevada-Utah Conference chose “In such an hour…Behold I come quickly” as this year’s theme. Four speakers wove the theme into their seminars and sermons. Lewis Walton, speaker, author and retired attorney, was the featured speaker who talked every evening about the coming of Jesus.
Cindy Tutsch, associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate, related the Holy Spirit to the present day and helped make Ellen White more accessible to families.
Henry Martin, vice president for public relations at Weimar Institute in California, gave a seminar telling about his personal struggles with God, and how God has worked through him.
Dr. Philip Samaan, theology professor at Southern Adventist University, spoke about the importance of trusting in God.
Larry Moore, then president of the Nevada-Utah Conference, commented on the extremely high quality of the speakers. “I think they’re going to be very inspirational,” he said.
After attending Martin's seminar, Robert Erwin said, “He’s given us all an example of how to lead people to Christ without necessarily doing Bible studies.”
Lisia Latu and Jan Krpalek, the junior tent leaders, chose community service as this year’s theme for the juniors. Latu and Krpalek did various activities with the juniors, including taking them onto an overgrown trail to pick up rocks and weeds. As they cleared the trail, Latu said, “I never said it’s going to be easy. Service never is.”
Leaders scheduled a variety of daily events for the youth. However, the schedule did not go as smoothly as planned. The hay ride scheduled on Tuesday night ended up getting cancelled. Wednesday, early morning rain caused many to worry about the day's trip to the water park. Fortunately, the skies cleared in time for the outing.
Thursday, it rained most of the day, causing the cancellation of the trip to Rotary Park. Despite the uncooperative weather, the youth still had a very good time. Their leaders, Sergio Romero and Gustavo Orozco, did everything they could to make the camp meeting as enjoyable as possible.
