LSU Celebrates 10 Years with Geraty
By Tamara Wolcott Fisher
In February a series of events honored Lawrence T. Geraty for 10 years of service as La Sierra University president. During one of the events, a new endowed chair gift of $1 million was announced for the School of Religion.
Dr. Yin Fong Chan gave $1 million as a tribute to Thomas S. Geraty, father of President Geraty and Adventist educator, administrator and minister for 40 years. The funds will provide the initial endowment named the Thomas S. Geraty Chair in Ministry.
Chan is a retired and successful, though humble, businessman. A long-time and dedicated Adventist, he has a strong faith in God and believes in Christian education. Chan praises the academic program at La Sierra as well as the values that he sees represented.
Dr. David Jang added a $100,000 tribute challenge gift to the Thomas S. Geraty Chair. Jang is a professor of medicine and radiology, division of cardiology, in the department of medicine and cardiac catheterization laboratories at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and Loma Linda University Medical Center. In 1998, Jang designed and developed the PSJ-3 Coronary Stent which he sold to Pfizer Corporation. In 2002, he founded the Jang Foundation to benefit society with special focus on religious goals, missionary work and a wide range of educational projects as well as assistance to the poor and needy.
