Almost all of the 73 graduates of the second Paradise CHIP program have lowered their cholesterol after only four weeks on the lifestyle-changing program.
Those who entered the program with a cholesterol reading higher than 240 lowered that figure by an average of nine percent in four weeks through diet and exercise. Those with levels between 200-239 dropped more than 14 percent. Kaye Carson and Casey Downham earned the "Plunger Award" with a dramatic decrease of 57 pointsmore than 40 percent.
Of the more than 20 diabetics who enrolled in the program, more than half are now totally independent of insulin, and others have been able to significantly reduce their dosage.
One 84-year-old could not walk to her front door without her walker before CHIP. Now she walks three to four miles a day with her walker and gets around her home without it.
Participants covered a total of 6,342 miles during their exercise programs. Niles Dodd won the "Globetrotter Award" for walking more than 341 miles in the 30 days.
CHIP's health focus appeals to community members, too. More than 50 percent of the graduates were not Adventist.
