Pathfinders Pedal Picacho Peak
By Carol Pearson
Enthusiastic Pathfinders, staff and parents gathered in the shadow of Picacho Peak in the early hours of Nov. 2 for their long-awaited Pathfinder bike-a-thon. The Glendale Eagles and some conference staff camped there the night before and were on hand to greet the other bikers when they arrived the next morning.
"A record 70 miles was the highlight for the day, but there were participants of all ages and bikes of all sizes trekking the five-mile stretch," said conference youth director Tony Anobile. "It was great to see our young people striving for their goals and doing their best, no matter how many miles they rode."
A milepost manned by a staff member marked each mile on the five-mile frontage road stretch. There riders could pause for a water break and rest area. Fourteen clubs from throughout the state were represented, with 122 total riders. Not only did Pathfinders have an opportunity to complete the 50-mile ride, which is a part of the cycling honor, but they also raised money for their clubs.
