Young Adults Take Time Off For Evangelism
By Candice Caballero
In a time when youthful workers for Christ are scarce, four 20-something young adults have answered the call to become Bible workers in the Central California Conference.
The nine-month project, known as Souls-West Track III, runs from September 2004 through May 2005. These young adults will work hand-in-hand with the Waterford, Madera and Ceres churches preparing for evangelistic outreach efforts in 2005.
Souls West, located in Scottsdale, Ariz., is the Pacific Union’s two-year program designed to create leaders in church outreach, literature evangelism and Bible work. Track III (third year) is a practical externship.
Why would college students want to spend nine months of their lives finding people who want to study the Bible? One Bible study contact named Fidel asked, "Do you guys get paid or earn college credit for giving Bible studies?"
Fidel, a humble Hispanic man, seemed a little embarrassed. "I don't have money to pay you right now, but when I have some, I'll donate."
"Oh, no!" exclaimed the Bible worker. "Our reward for doing this work is finding people like you who are seeking truth."
While working full-time building God’s kingdom, each Bible worker is amply cared for, thanks to funding provided by local churches, church members and the Central California Conference camp meeting evangelism offering. They gain not only experience from field work, but also participate in programs such as the WestPoint of Evangelism and the General Youth Conference.
According to Susan Santos, a Bible worker for the Ceres church, “Bible work is a best-kept secret.”
In Matthew 13:45-46, Jesus says, "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field" (NKJV).
No one can place a price on the joy Bible workers feel when they see "seekers of truth" making decisions for Jesus and His kingdom.
