New Stop-Smoking Booklet Developed by Loma Linda and Pacific Press
By Nicole Batten
A new stop-smoking booklet, prepared in consultation with Loma Linda University School of Medicine and School of Public Health in Loma Linda, Calif., is now available from Pacific Press. The 16-page, full-color booklet, titled Tobacco: You Can Be Free, combines the latest clinical research with a detailed plan for successful recovery from nicotine addiction.
Dr. Linda Hyder Ferry, M.P.H., associate professor of family medicine and preventive medicine at Loma Linda University, was the primary consultant for Tobacco: You Can Be Free. Ferry has 25 years of treating tobacco and other addictions to her credit. Her pivotal research led to the approval in 1997 of bupropion, the first FDA-approved, non-nicotine, pharmacological treatment for tobacco dependence. Dr. Mickey Ask, an addiction specialist, Dr. Douglas Plata, M.P.H, and Dr. Joon Rhee, M.P.H., specialists in preventive medicine, also contributed to the development of Tobacco: You Can Be Free.
Tobacco helps users understand their nicotine addiction and teaches them how to prepare for success, including building a support team around them. “Quitting tobacco isn’t an event that happens on a magical ‘quit day,’ says Ferry. “It’s a journey that begins with self-discovery about the reasons why you smoke and why nicotine addiction is so compelling. Once you’re empowered with that knowledge, you can tailor the treatment steps to your situation, get professional help, and banish tobacco from your life.”
This sharing booklet on tobacco provides a strategy that really works for people who feel defeated by tobacco addiction, says Dale Galusha, vice president of ministries and sales at Pacific Press. “It is perfect for sharing with a friend or loved one or for use in stop-smoking programs, and is even inexpensive enough to give away at fair booths. And, of course, every Adventist medical professional will want to make it available to their patients,” says Galusha.
Tobacco: You Can Be Free is available at your local Adventist Book Center. To purchase a copy, call 800-765-6955 or visit www.AdventistBookCenter.com. The booklet retails for $.99 each. Quantity pricing is available.
