Reform and Refocus
Starting on the next page of this issue of the Recorder is a proposal voted by the Union Executive Committee that addresses a long-standing and growing problem in our churches. We talk about it in various places, sometimes wring our hands, and often say someone should do something about it. Yet because we are talking about someone else’s church and other ethnic groups, it is easier to leave the matter to another time and another group to deal with.
Change is Never Easy
The Pacific Union Executive Committee regularly looks at various ways to address the problem of slow growing and dying churches. After some careful study and much discussion, the executive committee has voted to recommend to our churches some bold actions to change the slow rate of church growth in the Pacific Union. It envisions a new way for churches to work together. Some of it is controversial; we know that. Some of it will not be easy to accomplish, but if implemented, could make a major difference in the future success of our churches in reaching their communities for Christ.
The K-12 educational system would also be better prepared to grow into the 21st century if churches worked together instead of operating as independent units. One model would especially favorably address many of the negative issues of the educational system.
The Time is Now
Your leaders feel the time has come to not only talk about, but also do something about how we conduct church ministry. Accepting the status quo and hoping someone will find a solution will not help.
But let me warn you before you read this proposal that a large number of the 739 churches around our union will be impacted if we really get serious about this matter. As you read, there will no doubt be some things you agree with and some you don’t. That is all right. We understand the proposal is not perfect, and has not anticipated every situation. But approach your reading with an open mind and a prayer for God’s wisdom. If we can just see churches sit down together and discuss the matters addressed, and the proposed solutions, we will be on a better road than we are now.
The Challenge for Your Church
The union committee believes the time has come for all of our churches to link themselves together to more effectively reach our communities. We would suggest no church operate alone. Instead, we recommend every church create or join one of the three cooperative models. As one person observed: “It is time to make the best use of all our assets to reach people — regardless of demographic shifts and regardless of whether the membership on the inside of the church resembles the population outside.” But remember, nothing will happen if you just read the proposal and do nothing. Pull out this eight-page section and take it to your pastor, the board and anyone else who may work with you in implementing this ministry plan. Let me urge you to take the lead as a church leader or member in developing a specific action plan with other churches in your area.
Sincerely your friend,
Tom Mostert, president
