Parents and children of the Lockeford Church participate in a club called Adventurers. Created by the General Conference, Adventurers gives children the opportunity to belong to an organized peer group. To join, children are invited to participate with their parents in a variety of activities that improve their social, physical, mental and spiritual skills.
The Lockeford Church members decided to start a club for their own children and use it as a tool for outreach to the community. Children, the church believes, are powerful evangelizers, and as each child invites a neighbor, the little group at the Lockeford Church is growing.
Leaders at Lockeford Adventurers try to plan activities that are entertaining, but also teach lessons. For example, a loud pop signals the release of a Bible clue from inside a large, colorful balloon. The Adventurers soon pull the whole story of Noah together from clues that were floating in the balloons. Another illustration might involve a lion mask made from a paper plate, which helps tell the story of Daniel, and memorizing Bible texts is a snap when part of a fast-paced game. All these activities complete the requirements needed for special award patches, which are worn proudly from week to week.
