Karen Nicola is the marketing and recruiting director for Rio Lindo Academy.
Rio Lindo Academy began a new ministry work program this summer called Students with a Mission. SWAM is a student-based work program that goes door-to-door presenting Adventist literature to the community.
The community benefits by this approach, because they end up with quality and timely literature in their homes, said Steve Nicola, coordinator and teacher for the program. The students benefit because they learn the value of door-to-door ministry and earn income for their tuition expenses. Students receive a credit on their school accounts for 50 percent of the donations they bring in.
Senior Andy Shurtliff is excited about this work ministry. Last week I was able to pray with a woman after she purchased three message books (Steps to Christ, Christ Object Lessons, and Desire of Ages) he said. I looked up after the prayer and saw a face full of gratitude. That was reward enough!
I colporteur because I want God to have full control of my life and use me to minister to other people. What better job is out there where God is speaking directly through you to win peoples salvation? said Amy Gerber.
Students receive academic credit for the training course that goes along with the MagaBook sales program. This training prepares students with door-to-door ministry skills and offers the opportunity for each student to get personally involved with the material they are presenting at the doors.
Rio Lindos principal, Albert Miller, is very supportive of the SWAM program. I am happy to provide a chance for kids to minister to our community, he said.
